“It’s great to see people build their confidence and skills as they learn new things.”

Yuki, Buna Reserve Community Garden Volunteer Coordinator.

Buna Reserve Community Garden, located on Buna Street in West Heidelberg, has 12 regular members who help look after the garden and grow produce. Yuki is one of the Garden Volunteer Coordinators.

“The reason I volunteer here is that I love to grow my own food and I love to encourage others to do the same. It’s so satisfying to see people come together, get dirt on their hands, share a cuppa and taste the beautiful food we all grow together. The community garden is open to everyone; we support people who have never gardened before – it’s great to see people build their confidence and skills as they learn new things. We are involved in all aspects of tending the garden, including composting, planting and harvesting. It’s so good to grow our own fruit and vegetables and be able to take them home to cook, eat and enjoy; the food looks and tastes so different from shop bought produce.

The most important part of Buna Garden is the community connection, bringing together people who live nearby to have some fun. It’s a wonderful place for people of all ages and abilities to get outside. I love coming down here with my family. It is a special place and different from going for a walk or taking the kids to the park.”
