John Ferraro Chair of Board

John was born and raised in the Banyule community, and lives locally with his family.  John is a trained Orthoptist and has previously worked as a clinician in the private and public sector. He has also been employed in various roles within the acute health and university sectors and holds a Master of Health Administration. John is passionate about high quality, safe and equitable health care for all members of the community.  He has held senior leadership roles in health for over a 15 years and currently works at Eastern Health as a Program Director. John loves spending time with his family and attending various sporting events. John has been a Banyule Community Health Board Director since 2008.

Chris Deakin - Deputy Chair

Chris has lived locally and been an active member of the community for over 25 years, raising her family whilst forging a career in the superannuation industry. Chris is committed to gender equity and social justice, and values the role that Banyule Community Health plays in its community. Chris currently works as an Executive Manager of an industry super fund and is a passionate Richmond supporter. Chris has been a Banyule Community Health Board Director since 2013.

Craig Trenfield - Treasurer

Craig is a highly regarded and experienced leader in finance in the health sector. Craig has held a number of financial executive roles in health in Victoria. Craig is driven to ensure the local community have equitable access to high quality care and the facilities that enable this to occur.

Craig has been a Banyule Community Health Board Director since 2012.

Anita Brown

View Bio

Anita brings a wealth of legal and commercial experience to the Board as a legal practitioner, as well as being committed to various social justice issues. Anita has lived locally for many years and has been involved at a governance level of local Neighbourhood House and many community activities.
Anita works as an Intellectual Property Lawyer, was a member of the Federal Government’s Information Advisory Committee and has a daughter in primary school. Anita has been a Banyule Community Health Board Director since 2012 and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Anthony O'Donnell - Board

Anthony was born and raised locally, and continues to live locally with his young family. Anthony has a long career in the health sector with a number of key leadership roles in large public hospitals including the Austin, Eastern Health and Royal Melbourne Hospital. Anthony brings experience in both clinical and non-clinical roles, including Project Management of the Box Hill Hospital Redevelopment. Anthony has been a Banyule Community Health Board Director since 2011.

Peter Ogden - Board

Peter Ogden

Peter has lived locally for over 50 years, raising his family, volunteering in many and varied ways that supports inclusion and engagement, and is a now retired small business owner. Peter provides a strong association to the local West Heidelberg community making positive connections and values strongly the opportunity to represent them at the Board level.
Peter is an Essendon tragic and can often be found talking over the crossword.

Peter has been a Banyule Community Health Board Director since 1990.

Dr Melissa Russell - Board

Dr Melissa Russell

Melissa’s background is as a physiotherapist and she has worked in a variety of fields of physiotherapy in Australia and overseas. Following many years as a physiotherapist Melissa undertook her PhD through the University of Melbourne and the National Ageing Research Institute and completed it in 2008. She has since worked in public health research, focusing on the areas of healthy ageing, the benefits of physical activity and injury prevention.  She is currently employed at the University of Melbourne as a Lecturer in Epidemiology and Coordinator of the Master of Public Health course. Melissa has been has been a Banyule Community Health Board Director since 2011.

Michael Smith - Board

Michael Smith

Michael brings a lifelong commitment to working with vulnerable communities, which includes roles in youth homelessness, disability, local council and community legal. Michael currently holds a senior leadership role in the Community Legal Sector. He is particularly focussed on encouraging collaboration and partnerships across community health and legal sectors. Michael has been a Banyule Community Health Board Director since 2015.
