The proposed merger between Banyule Community Health and Merri Health enters an exciting next stage today.
Formal consultation with staff starts today, presenting the plan for change and seeking staff feedback. This is a key milestone on the journey mapped out by the two Boards nearly 12 months ago when the merger exploration was announced in October 2023.
It follows the successful completion of due diligence which confirmed the compatibility and strong operations of both organisations. Regular updates have been shared with staff and stakeholders throughout the journey to keep them informed.
The Banyule Community Health and Merri Health Boards have sought legal and sector advice on the best way to achieve a ‘merger of equals’ and create a ‘new organisation’. The clear advice to achieve continuity of services to clients and communities, ongoing accreditation, staff certainty, and registration with key funding bodies is to roll Banyule Community Health into Merri Health.
This is a legal process that has the overwhelming support of both the Banyule Community Health Board and the Merri Health Board. This process is confirmed by a legal transfer deed that outlines the commitments, including the development of a new brand and will establish a new Board with equal Directors from each organisation.

Subject to the staff consultation, the next stages will include upcoming Special General Meetings for members; and the opportunity for community, clients and volunteers to share in developing a new name and brand that represents our past and future vision for a merged New Organisation.
